  1. Tom Cruise is an award-winning American actor and filmmaker best known for movies in the ‘Mission: Impossible’ film series in which he plays secret agent Ethan Hunt. 
  2. He is considered to be one of the biggest movie stars in the United States and was Hollywood's highest-paid actor in 2012.
  3. Born in New York to an abusive father and brought up in near-poverty, there was nothing in his early life to suggest that one day he would become one of the most famous actors 
  4. in the world. Even as a teenager Cruise dreamed of becoming a priest, not an actor. 
  5. However, destiny had other plans in store for him and he found himself playing a small role in a film ‘Endless Love’ as a 19 year old. 
  6. He realized that acting came naturally to him and decided to seriously pursue acting as a career. 
  7. Over the next few years he appeared in a lot of supporting roles before bagging his first major role in the romantic comedy ‘Risky Business’. 
  8. Strikingly handsome and blessed with boyish charms, it did not take him long to take Hollywood by storm and soon he established himself as a much sought after A-list star.

  10. He was born as Thomas Cruise Mapother IV in Syracuse, New York, as the son of Mary Lee and Thomas Cruise Mapother III. 
  11. His father was an electrical engineer and his mother worked as a special education teacher. He has three sisters.
  12. He had a difficult childhood and grew up in near-poverty. His father was an abusive man who often used to beat young Tom at the slightest pretext.
  13. The family moved to Canada when his father got a job with the Canadian Armed Forces. However, his parents broke up within a few years and Tom Cruise returned to the U.S. with his mother and sisters.

  15. As a teenager he briefly attended a Franciscan seminary in Cincinnati on a church scholarship and aspired to become a Catholic priest.

  28. His second marriage was to actress Nicole Kidman in December 1990. The couple adopted two children. This marriage also ended in divorce.
  29. He tied the knot for the third time with Katie Holmes with whom he also has a daughter. This marriage too did not last long and ended in 2012.

  32. Cruise earned roughly $75 million for Mission: Impossible II (2000). He did this by turning down any upfront salary, 
  33. for instead taking a back-end deal that landed him 30% of the film's gross for both his producing and acting duties.

  35. Has donated to charities such as The Ashley Flint Fund, The Tsunami Relief Fund, Themoms.biz Diabetes Fund, Hillary Clinton's Campaign and The Church of Scientology.
